Frankie And Johnny was not much of an improvement on Harum Scarum, as a musical or as a movie. Elvis overdubbed many of his vocals onto pre-recorded instrumental tracks. The best that could be said about it was that he had now been induced to record two movie soundtracks in a row (in July he would record a third, Paradise, Hawaiian Style, with the three representing the sum total of his 1965 recordings). But his level of commitment was no greater, as evidenced by the increasing prevalence of vocal overdubs from a singer who had always prided himself on the feeling he put into his live studio performances.
