The big problem with the March sessions, recorded at RCA’s Hollywood studios, was material. Elvis was personally enthusiastic about nearly every song, from Perry Como’s “And I Love You So” to the contemporary country classic “Green, Green Grass Of Home.” The trouble was that they were almost all covers of well-known originals. And when they weren’t, Elvis’ publishing interests, represented almost exclusively at this point by Freddy Bienstock, were no longer able to supply him with anything likely to strike either his or the public’s fancy. Nonetheless, the album sold well (close to 400,000 initially).
